If you see this error while installing an eSIM on your iPhone, it means the device could not complete the eSIM download.
In most cases, changing your internet connection or using a VPN resolves the issue.
Quick Fix Steps
- Change Your Internet Connection
- Connect to a stable WiFi or mobile data network
- Free WiFi networks, or Satellite-based networks on planes or ships, may not work for eSIM downloads
- Turn Off Airplane Mode
- Make sure Airplane Mode is disabled
- Remove Old eSIMs
- If your phone has many old eSIMs, delete unused ones to free space
- Try Using a VPN
- Some networks block eSIM download protocols
- Installing the eSIM through a VPN often resolves the issue
Possible Blockers
Certain internet providers, corporate networks, and public WiFi hotspots restrict download protocols, including eSIM downloads. Well-known examples include:
- Airport WiFi networks such as Qatar Airport WiFi
- ISPs in some countries, such as Oman, that block downloads of non-domestic eSIMs
- Corporate or office networks with restricted firewall rules
In addition, SM-DP+ activation servers may restrict downloads from IP addresses in widely sanctioned regions. For example, if you are connecting from Russia or another heavily sanctioned country, using a VPN is often required to complete the eSIM download.
In rare cases, this error may appear even if the eSIM was already downloaded. You can check this by going to Settings → Cellular and reviewing the list of SIMs on your device.
Another uncommon cause is an existing eSIM blocking new installations. Some Claro Brazil eSIMs, and occasionally Verizon eSIMs, prevent additional eSIMs from being added. Removing the existing eSIM frees the eSIM chip for a new installation.
